Adarna House
TWENTY-ONE YEARS AND STILL COUNTING!
A thirty-year old man walks into the Adarna House booth at last September's Philippine Book Fair, with his four-year old in tow, and asks for a copy of Pilandok. The seller immediately hands him a copy and assures him that his four-year old will love the story. But the man, shakes his head and says, "Actually, I'm buying the book for myself."
Such is the magic of Adarna House, the country's first children's book publishing house. For twenty years, Adarna
House has enthralled Filipino kids with its mix of Filipino folktales, endearing stories and heroic tales. Many adults, like the man who bought Pilandok, will remember how their childhood was spent meeting characters such as Tiktaktok and Pikpakbum, Digong Dilaw, Ibong Adarna and Langgam and Tipaklong, in the pages of Adarna book. Today's kids can choose from among Adarna House's over 150 titles-all original Filipino stories. These books are result of an intense book development process that includes market research;focus group discussions with kids, parents, librarians and educators; kid testing; and a month-long screening process for manuscript and portfolio submissions from both amateur and professional writers and illustrators.
BACK IN 1979…
Not everyone knows how ADARNA HOUSE began. It all started in 1979, when the Nutrition Center of the Philippines (NCP) started a storybook series that was to be part of its mental feeding program. Virgilio Almario, acclaimed poet and critic, was tasked with heading a group of writers, illustrators, editors, media practitioners and researchers who would create the series called Aklat Adarna. When the program ended, Almario continued Aklat Adarna by publishing through the Children's Communication Center (CCC), a foundation that aimed to produce, promote and disseminate educational materials for children. Soon, CCC needed a distributor and publisher for its many publications for children; in 1980, Adarna House was born.
ADARNA HOUSE HAS WORKED WITH A LOT OF FRIENDS
What happened next was the growth of a sales network that carried Aklat Adarna throughout the country; the books are are not only available in all leading bookstores, they are also carried to the different regions, by Adarna House's sales coordinators. In addition to these storybooks, Adarna House has also worked with many agencies, both local and foreign, on other publications for children. These agencies include United Nations International Children's Fund (UNICEF); United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO; Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre for Unesco (ACCU); Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD); Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS); and the Filipinas Heritage Library. And for all these books, Adarna House has won a slew of awards from the Catholic Mass Media, the National Book Awards, the Gintong Aklat Awards, and the Gawad Surian ng Wikang Pambansa.
Choy was one of the storytellers of Biyaheng Adarna since 1999 to 2000.
